Fair Credit Reporting
Your credit report can read like your biography. It lists where you lived, where you worked, what types of credit cards you have, how much debt you have, if you have filed for bankruptcy, paid your taxes, been sued, or had any debts turned over to a collection agency. Sometimes, someone else’s bad information ends up on your credit report! Remember you always have a right to a fair and accurate credit report.
Negative information such as any bankruptcies, judgements, closed accounts with late payments, or liens against you can stay on your record for years, impacting many decisions during that time.
- Bankruptcies stay on your record for seven to ten years, depending on the type of bankruptcy
- Closed accounts with late payments stay for seven years
- Collection accounts stay for seven years past the date of the last payment
- Late payments are reported for seven years after the payment
- Judgements against you are reported for seven years
- Tax liens are reported for 15 years if they are not paid and seven years after the payment if they are paid
If you have been denied a job, or denied credit, had insurance premiums raised or otherwise hurt by an unfair or inaccurate credit report, you could recover monetary damages from the credit reporting agency AND have your credit record corrected.
